This first HD photo shows one of two small ponds that are situated within the Grand Carre area of the Jardin des Tuileries, which is the eastern part of the gardens close to the Musee du Louvre, and during the warmer months they are used as small boating lakes.
Now here you can see a gentleman standing by his cart as he was working on one of the model sailing boats that he was repairing and getting more ready for the children to have some fun, while they are in these historical gardens.
And in this image you can see three of the very different model sailing boats bobbing around on the pond, which is actually the northern boating pond of the Tuileries Gardens called the Vivier nord.
It was actually during the reign of King Louis XIV that Andre Le Notre was commissioned to redesign the Jardin des Tuileries, which was a formal French style with parterres, and he placed three different basins in strategic places close to the palace, with this being one of those dating back to the 1600s.
The Tuileries Gardens was the first royal park in Paris to be opened to the public for promenading, and it was also a place for festivities and celebrations, and by the end of the 1800s there were many attractions for its visitors including puppet shows and donkey rides, along with small boats on the basins.
Therefore this is a tradition that has continued, even though these activities stopped during World War I and World War II when the city was under occupation, and even during the Liberation of Paris there was immense fighting within the gardens, but fortunately, activities resumed afterwards.
However, as you can see in this photograph, renovations are constantly ongoing at the Musee du Louvre and also within the Jardin des Tuileries, with one of the major points being the completion of a closed-circuit water distribution system for all of the ponds in 2011.
But here you can see another image looking over the formal French garden area of the Grand Carre with its parterres along with other model boats ready to be utilised by children on the Vivier nord pond within the Tuileries Gardens, which is a great way to let them have some fun if you are on holiday in Paris as a family.
