A Parterre generally means On The Ground in English, and this was one of the design concepts for a Jardin a la Francaise that utilised standard shapes defined by borders of gravel or planting beds in geometric patterns, which could be seen from above, such as from the rooms of the palace or a terrace.

And this is a view over the Petit Reserve sud parterre with its defining gravel border looking in a north westerly direction as we were standing within the Grand Carre area of the Tuileries Gardens, which would have originally been the garden area closest to the Palais des Tuileries, before it was destroyed by fire during the Paris Commune.
