Stone vases in the style you can see in this photograph have been a popular addition to many gardens of palaces throughout France, and are often located next to walkways, sometimes still being utilised for holding flowers, like at the Jardin du Luxembourg, and you will see many of these at the Jardin des Tuileries, also in Paris.

And this is a view looking in a north westerly direction over the Demi-lune carre de fer nord within the Grand Carre area of the Tuileries Gardens, with its different flowerbeds defining each section, which was originally designed and laid out in 1664 by the landscape gardener Andre Le Notre, exactly 100 years after the garden was first created for Catherine de Medici.
