A French formal garden will have what are known as parterres, which are uniformed green areas designed in symmetry, often having planting beds adorned with flowers and shrubs, just as you can in this photograph taken looking in a south westerly direction over the Demi-lune carre de fer nord within the Grand Carre area of the Jardin des Tuileries.

And incredibly there are over 125,000 plants and flowers located within the Tuileries Gardens that are cared for and organised each year by an entire team of dedicated gardeners, yet when these gardens were laid out by Andre Le Notre in the 1600s, orange flowers like you can in this image were not even available in France, and were only introduced to the country in the 1700s.
