This is a view looking in a south, south westerly direction towards a statue and beyond to the balustrade style parapet on the edge of the Terrasse du Bord de l'Eau, which overlooks the River Seine, and was one of the terraces put in place in the Tuileries Gardens when they were designed by the landscape architect Andre Le Notre.

The idea was so that the royal family and their court could enjoy elevated views over their gardens and surrounding area, however, during the reign of Napoleon III, this area was made into a playground for his son, the Prince Imperial, and it was only when they were not residing at the Palais des Tuileries, that this terrace area was open to the public.
