The Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel was constructed for Napoleon Bonaparte and acted as an elaborate gateway between the Palais du Louvre and the former Palais des Tuileries, yet after the Tuileries Palace was destroyed by fire during the Paris Commune, this area was laid out as an additional garden on either side of the courtyard.

This also meant that the triumphal arch now provides an impressive view down the historical axis that travels through the centre of the Jardin des Tuileries to the Place de la Concorde where you can see the big wheel had been set up when we took this photo, as we were looking in a north westerly direction
