HD photograph of The Mediterranean inside Tuileries Gardens looking north easterly - Page 278
It was the Minister of Culture, Andre Malraux, who decided the statues sculpted by Aristide Maillol that had been donated to the City of Paris by Dina Vierny, his last model and muse, would be placed within the Tuileries Gardens in a dedicated area called the Jardin du Carrousel, which had originally been laid out after the Palais des Tuileries had been demolished in 1882.

In fact, this was the first time that more modern art works had been placed within the Tuileries Gardens, as previously they all dated from the 1700s and 1800s, but since then, as well as the one you can see in this photograph called The Mediterranean, other modern and contemporary art sculptures have been installed, along with a major restoration project that has been ongoing since the 1980s, when the French President, Francois Mitterrand announced the Grand Louvre project.
