We were standing at a pathway within the Grand Carre area of the Tuileries Gardens that crosses to take you to different ponds, one of which you can see in this photograph, and this is a view looking in an easterly direction over the Petit Reserve Nord.

Now a French formal garden known as a Jardin a la Francaise utilises different aspects with geometry and separate areas called parterres, which usually have flowerbed borders and often have gravel to define specific areas, just as you can see here, and perfected at the Chateau de Versailles by the landscape architect Andre Le Notre, he utilised this formal design at the Jardin des Tuileries as well.
