The Jardin du Carrousel became a part of the Tuileries Gardens after the palace was destroyed by fire, which meant that this opened up the gardens directly to the Louvre Museum that you can see a small part of here and it was Andre Malraux the Minister for Cultural Affairs, who decided to install works by Aristide Maillol in this area, one of which is The Monument to the Dead of Port Vendres you can see here.

And the name Carrousel that relates to the garden, courtyard and square with the triumphal arch all originated from an event that was organised by King Louis XIV on the 5th and 6th of June 1662 to celebrate the birth of his first male heir, and a part of the event was a kind of traditional jousting tournament called a carrousel.
