A part of the design concept for a Jardin a la Francaise were for the royal gardens to be seen from above, and therefore, as well as from the palace itself, terraces were also constructed so that the royal family and their court could admire other parts of their garden.

And this was one of the concepts that Andre Le Notre put in place when he designed the Tuileries Gardens, and this is view looking in a south easterly direction on the Terrasse du Bord de l'Eau, with the Musee de l'Orangerie that holds the Water Lilies paintings by Monet, to the right hand side of the image.
