We were standing on the south west side of the Grand Bassin Rond, which in English translates to the Large Round Basin, and looking in a north easterly direction towards the Pavillon de Marsan wing of the famous Louvre Museum, this is situated in the Grand Carre area of the Tuileries Gardens.

Although this area of the garden was closed off to the public when King Louis Philippe and Napoleon III were in residence at the Palais des Tuileries, at all other times since 1793 it has been open to the general public, and prior to that, from the year 1664 it was open to selected public.
