Part of the concept for a Jardin a la Francaise was making royal gardens symmetrical, but designed in a way that they could be seen from above, so therefore, rather than just being able to be seen from the palace itself, terraces were constructed for people to be able to experience elevated views.

And this is a view looking towards one of the historical equestrian statues located at the entrance to the Jardin des Tuileries by the Place de la Concorde, and when we took this photo we were standing on the north western terrace called the Terrasse du Jeu de Paume.
