You will find that animal statues have been used to adorn places such as temples for centuries, and lion statues are often used to depict an animal guardian for palaces, etc, hence why you can see this lion statue positioned on the wall of the Tuileries Gardens.

And this is positioned on the south side of the wall that faces into the Place de la Concorde, hence it is the side nearest to the River Seine and where there are steps leading up to the terrace that is home to the Musee de l'Orangerie.
