At this point we had just walked to the centre of the Pont Neuf Bridge on to the Ile de la Cite Island, and at the end of this part of the island you can find a park come gardens called Square du Vert Galant, which has some interesting history and has become a popular tourist attraction in its self, but it is also a great place to have a break or just to relax, but the really cool thing is, it is in the middle of the River Seine, as you can see from these high definition photos.

This photo shows the Square du Vert Galant that sits in the middle of the River Seine
The Square du Vert Galant along with the Place Dauphine are named after King Louis XIII, who was the son of King Henri IV, and both were originally designed when the Pont Neuf was constructed, which is the bridge over the River Seine that you can see in this HD photo that runs in between these two squares, but getting back to the Square du Vert Galant, as you can tell, it is a lovely small garden that provides great views of the river and specific monuments such as the famous Louvre museum.

The Square du Vert Galant was obtained by the city back in 1884 and transformed, which was when it got its current name, and in 2007 it obtained a label called the Espace vert Ecologique, which translates to an Ecological Green Space, and when you look at this image with the incredibly wide variety of flora, it is easy to understand why this garden in Paris, that is situated in a quiet location, is just as popular today as it was centuries ago.

Now the Square du Vert Galant is a popular tourist attraction in Paris in its self, but there is also a sightseeing tour company called the Vedettes du Pont Neuf, that offers cruises on the River Seine which operates from the quay right here, and this photograph shows a part of their dock next to the gardens, which we took from above while standing by the statue of King Henri IV.

We took this photo looking towards the end of the Square du Vert Galant, and even though you can see a gentleman with a bottle of water, if you have one that needs topping up, then there is one of the famous Wallace Fountains located within this pretty park in Paris, that also has numerous different species of plants and trees, which provide much needed shade on a hot summers day.

As you can tell from this image, the Square du Vert Galant at the tip of the Ile de la Cite, is actually lower than the rest of the island and was prone to flooding from the River Seine, but having been transformed into a beautiful garden back in the 1800s, it has remained a popular place for relaxation and as a romantic getaway from the hustle and bustle of other parts of Paris.

Although sitting around reading or sunbathing on the grass on a warm sunny day is a popular pass time with both locals and tourists that visit the Square du Vert Galant, as you can see in this photo, there are also numerous park benches you can also utilise in this pretty garden in Paris, which is also a popular place for couples and romantic strolls in the evening.

Situated at the tip of the Ile de la Cite island and in the middle of the River Seine, this beautiful park has numerous different species of flora and fauna, and as you can tell from this photo of the Square du Vert Galant, there is also a company called the Vedettes du Pont Neuf that operate sightseeing tours from the same location, which has made this an even more popular tourist destination in Paris.

We took this photo of the Square du Vert Galant from above by the statue of King Henri IV, and on a lovely sunny day it is a very popular place to relax amongst the numerous different types of plants, flowers and trees, which include yew, chestnut, maple, black walnut with its edible nuts, weeping willows, ginkgo biloba and Bohemian olive trees, however, we would like to point out that it is not accessible to the disabled due to steep stone stairs that have to be negotiated to get down to it.

Here you can see a photo we took showing the tip of the Ile de la Cite island with the Square du Vert Galant, which is situated at the opposite end to Notre Dame Cathedral, and this is a great place to watch the boats on the River Seine or just sit and relax by the waters edge under the shade of the trees.

Originally, there were small islands that made up the Ile de la Cite, but these were joined together during the reign of King Henri II in the 1600s, and bath houses were put in place in the 18th century at the tip of the island, yet abandoned a few years later it became a park and garden area, that then got named the Square du Vert Galant after King Henri IV, as this was his nickname, and this square became a popular place for a romantic stroll, and even today this is still the case, plus the Square du Vert Galant is a popular place to relax on the grass, read a book, sunbathe or admire the views of the river and beyond.
