Also while we were in the 14th Arrondissement of Paris, we took these photos showing the entrance to a famous tourist attraction called the Catacombes, located within Place Denfert-Rochereau.

The Catacombes has become a popular tourist attraction in Paris, and classed as a museum, here you can see the entrance to this, which is located right next to the eastern Barriere d'Enfer building at the Place Denfert-Rochereau, and this takes you down to the burial place for millions of former city residents
Now we said that this was a popular tourist attraction, and when we were going to visit, the queues were going right round the corner and even past one of the small gardens, which was going to take approximately two hours to get inside, and our legs were already weary, so we decided not to wait this time.
But getting back to the Catacombes, you may not have realised that there are hundreds of kilometres of tunnels and quarries located underneath Paris, and it was back in the 1700s, when many churchyards were overflowing including having mass graves like those at the Saint-Eustace church, so with disease and infection rife, it was decided that the remains should be removed.
So, this photo shows the shield shaped tourist information plaque located next to the entrance to the Catacombes, detailing the History of Paris for this particular point, and it is only one small part of the original quarries and tunnels that is open to the public in this very unusual, yet daunting museum that is not for the faint hearted.
In fact, the place is not recommended for children, nor those with heart problems, anxiety, etc, and there are numerous steps you have to negotiate in order to get beneath the city into the galleries that have been designed with special lighting, some for enhancing sculptures and murals that were produced by quarry workers originally.
Yet we were also surprised to see so many people in shorts and t-shirts, even though it was a nice day, as the Catacombes are actually kept quite cool at approximately 14 degrees, but if you do have the chance to venture into this unusual museum in Paris, then it can be well worth it, which also has audio guides available in different languages.
However, as you can see in this photo, the small green building would be very easily missed as the entrance to the Catacombes, so as we mentioned earlier, this is at Place Denfert-Rochereau, and is situated on the eastern side of the road called the Avenue du Colonel Henri Rol-Tanguy, but if you really like the idea of discovering underground, you can even obtain a combination ticket to go and see the Archaeological Crypt by Notre Dame Cathedral as well.
