This panoramic HD photo shows the Square Georges Lamarque, which was first laid out back in 1904, and as you can tell, this has since been designed specifically with families in mind, providing a childrens playground complete with sandpits, but there are also a couple of table tennis tables for older children, along with plenty of park benches for adults to relax while their children play happily.
Yet this next photograph shows the tourist information board attached to the railings at the entrance to the Square Georges Lamarque, which provides a brief history, including why the square got this name.
So you will find that Georges Lamarque was born in 1914 and was mobilised with the French army at the start of World War II, and later during the war he became part of the French Resistance with the alias of Petrel, but unfortunately, while near Belfort, France, he and a couple of colleagues were spotted by the enemy and not resisting arrest to protect villagers, they were shot dead that same evening.
Therefore, after the war this square was named in his memory, and there is also a stele dedicated to Petrel located within the Square Georges Lamarque, which has been placed within a raised flowerbed close to the perimeter.
