This first HD photo shows a relief sculpture named Mars, which depicts the God of War in Roman religion and mythology who was most prominent of military gods and second in importance to Jupiter, being depicted as the father of Rome and representing military power as a way to seek peace.
Yet here is a close up of Mars, God of War with all his armour, which was sculpted back in the 1500s by Jean Goujon, who worked alongside the architect of the Aile Lescot to produce the numerous decorations for this historical wing of the former Palais du Louvre.
You will find that very little is known about Jean Goujon, although he is thought to have been born in Normandy in 1510 and upon arriving in Paris, he worked with the architect Pierre Lescot on the Fontaine des Innocents and the Eglise Saint-Germain l'Auxerroix prior to being documented as the sculptor for The Louvre between the years of 1556 through to 1562, which is when this and the other sculptures you can see in this photograph were produced.
However, here you can see the entire middles section of the Aile Lescot, which can be seen from the courtyard of the Louvre Museum called the Cour Carree, and when you are looking at this wing, the bas relief sculpture of Mars can be seen located to the left hand side of the window on the third level below the pediment.
