This first HD photo shows a statue called Penthesilee, which in English translates to Penthesilea, and in Greek mythology she was as Amazonian queen, the daughter of Ares and Otrera who killed Hippolyta in a hunting accident.
But wishing to die through remorse, Pentheilea joined the Trojan army so that she could die an honourable death in battle, and according to the ancient stories it was Achilles who killed her
Now this statue of Penthesilee was sculpted in marble by Vital Gabriel Dubray who was born in Paris in 1813, entering the Ecoles des Beaux Arts at the young age of sixteen and being taught by Jules Ramey, yet did not start exhibition at the Salons for French artists until 1840, but from this received numerous commissions.
In fact, Victor Gabriel Dubray received numerous different commissions to produce statues and monuments for tourist attractions including several for the Louvre Museum, including this one you can see on the Aile Est.
So, to see this statue of Pentheilea, you would need to be within the courtyard called the Cour Carree, and it can be found on the far right hand side of this facade on the ground floor level of the East Wing.
