This first HD photo shows a bas relief sculpture called Virgile, which is spelt Virgil in English, and this was designed to depict Publius Vergilius Maro who was usually known as Virgil or Vergil.
Now Virgil was an ancient Roman poet known for three major works with his Aeneid having become known as the National Epic of Rome from when it was first composed, right through to today, which has had a major influence on Western literature.
You will find that this sculpture of Virgile was produced by Antoine Denis Chaudet who was born in Paris in 1763 and furthering his studies at the Villa Medici after winning the Prix de Rome, upon his return to Paris he received numerous commissions including several for the former Palais du Louvre.
Antoine Denis Chaudet had a prolific, yet short career, with his works now found in museums and on tourist attractions around France, but through ill health he died at the young age of only 47.
Although, if you wish to see this sculpture of Virgile along with others on The Louvre by the same artist, you would need to be in the courtyard called the Cour Carree and looking at the Aile Lemercier wing, and this relief is positioned on the top level to the far right hand side below the pediment.
