This first HD photo shows a wide angle HD photo showing a top pediment on the Aile Lemercier wing of the former Palais du Louvre with the sculpture called Poesie Epique, which in English translates to Epic Poetry, sometimes referred to Lyric Poetry.
Now here is a close up of the relief, which was designed as an allegory and although it relates to poetry, because there is an old fashioned musical instrument called a lyre that the winged female figure is holding, this is why it is referred to as lyrical poetry.
You will find that this relief was sculpted by Antoine Denis Chaudet who was born in Paris in 1763 and studying to become a French sculptor, he won the Prix de Rome in 1784, which meant he could further his studies and career at the Villa Medici in Rome before returning to Paris.
Antoine Denis Chaudet received numerous different commissions with several for the Palais du Louvre including this one of Poesie Epique, and today his works can also be seen at tourist attractions such as the Chateau de Versailles, Chateau de Compiegne and within the Musee du Louvre.
However, this photograph shows the entire right hand section of the Aile Lemercier with the top pediment of Epic Poetry, and you will be able to see this facade from the courtyard of The Louvre called the Cour Carree.
