This first HD photo shows the statue called La Ceramique, which in English translates to The Ceramics, and this allegorical statue was produced in marble and put in place on the Aile Lemercier wing of the former Palais du Louvre back in 1874.
Here you can see a close up showing the detailing that went into producing this statue, which was by Eugene Guillaume who was born Jean Baptiste Claude Eugene Guillaume in 1822 and he studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts to become a French sculptor, winning the Prix de Rome in 1845.
Becoming well recognised for his skills, Euguene Guillaume had a prolific career receiving numerous different public commissions including this one of La Ceramique at The Louvre, and his works can be seen at tourist attractions in Paris like the Palais Garnier, Les Invalides, Fontaine Saint Michel and the Musee d'Orsay.
However, there are numerous monuments and statues located all over France in public places like Rouen, Clermont-Ferrand, Marseilles, Dijon, etc, plus others can be found in many different museums, including several held within the museum in his home town of Montbard, yet he passed away in Rome, having been elected director of the Academy de France in the city, and Eugene Guillaume held this position from 1891 through to 1904.
Although this particular image shows the location of the Ceramics statue positioned within a niche on the ground level of the Aile Lemercier, and when you are looking at this facade from the courtyard of The Louvre called the Cour Carree, you will see this as the second statue from the left hand side of this wing.
