This first HD photo shows a statue called La Sculpture, which is an allegory depicting Sculpture, although sometimes this is referred to as The Sculptor rather than The Sculpture, and although this is on the historical Aile Lescot wing dating from the 1500s, this statue was put in place in the mid 1800s.
Produced in marble, La Sculpture was executed by Francois Jouffroy, who was born in Dijon in 1806, initially studying drawing in his home town before obtaining a grant to study in Paris, where he was admitted to the Ecole des Beaux Arts and won the Prix de Rome in 1832.
Francois Jouffroy was a highly regarded French sculptor and he received numerous public commissions and orders for statues and other embellishments on famous tourist attractions such as the Palais Garnier, Eglise de lla Madeleine, Palais de Justice, busts at the Chateau de Versailles and no less than eight for the Palais du Louvre.
Throughout a prolific career, Francois Jouffroy received many different medals and awards including the Legion of Honour, and he was also appointed a professor at the School of Fine Arts, which is a position he held until passing away in 1882.
However, this photo shows the location of La Sculpture, which as you can tell, is on the ground floor level on the Aile Lescot facade, and when you are looking at this wing from the courtyard of the Louvre Museum called the Cour Carree, you will see it has been positioned within a niche on the far right hand side.
