In this first HD photo you can see a statue called Omphale, which was sculpted in marble to depict the Queen of the kingdom of Lydia who was the daughter of Iardanus in Greek mythology, an in one of the old stories she apparently had Heracles, called Hercules by the Romans, as a slave prior to him being released from this and becoming her husband.
So the Omphale statue was produced by Gustave Adolphe Desire Crauk who was born in 1827 and became a French sculptor having been taught by people such as Jules Ramey and James Pradier, going on to win the Prix de Rome in 1851.
From then on Gustave Adolphe Desire Crauk received numerous different state commissions and orders for statues and sculptures for the City of Paris to adorn different tourist attractions, with no less than seven for the former Palais du Louvre, along with others for places such as the Jardin Marco Polo and the Gare du Nord, yet many of his works can now be found within a museum in his home town of Valenciennes.
Now this photograph shows the location of the Omphale statue positioned within a niche on the Aile Sud and when you are looking at the facade from the courtyard of the Louvre Museum called the Cour Carree, you will see that this was placed as the first statue from the left hand side.
