Located on the western facade of the former Palais du Louvre called Aile Est, this first HD photo shows a statue called Orphee, which in English translates to Orpheus, and in ancient Greek myth and religion he was a legendary poet and musician that played a lyre, which you can see him holiday in his left hand.
But in this next close up photograph you can see some of the detailing that went into producing this marble statue of Orpheus, which was by Grabriel Jules Thomas, who was the son of a sculptor born in Paris in 1824 and followed in his fathers footsteps, entering the Ecole des Beaux Arts in 1841.
Studying under Etienne Jules Ramey and Augustin Dumont, he won the Prix de Rome in 1848, meaning he could further his studies and career at the Villa Medici French Academy in Rome, which then led to numerous different public commissions and orders for famous tourist attractions.
In fact, Gabriel Jules Thomas worked on statues and sculptures for the Palais Garnier, Gare du Nord, several different churches including the Eglise Saint Germain l'Auxerrois, and a few for the Louvre Museum including this one of Orphee, winning many medals along the way throughout his prolific career.
So this image shows the location of the Orphee marble statue depicting the legendary Orpheus, which can be found on the eastern wing of The Louvre called the Aile Est. And when you are looking at this facade from the courtyard called the Cour Carree, this statue was placed on the lower level within a niche, fourth from the left hand side.
