This first HD photo shows a marble statue depicting the mythological figure of Amphitrite, which is located on the Aile Nord facade of the former Palais du Louvre and was put in place in the 1860s.
So when you look at Greek mythology you will find that Amphitrite was a sea Goddess who was also the wife of Poseidon and classed as one of the Nereides, with her Roman counterpart being Salacia and a consort of Neptune as the Goddess of Salt Water.
Now this statue of Amphitrite was produced by Francois Devaulx who was born in Paris in 1808, studying at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and under Etienne Jules Ramey to become a French sculptor.
Throughout his career, Francois Devaulx received many public commissions for different statues and sculptures including some for churches like the Val de Grace, along with this and others for The Louvre.
However, his most famous work is probably that of the Greek Warrior equestrian statue group that was sculpted for the Pont d'Iena, and Francois Devaulx received a medal for this in 1849, prior to this statue being erected on the bridge.
But getting back to the statue of the Goddess Amphritrite, in this photo you can see that it is located within a niche on the first level of the Aile Nord and when you are looking at the facade of the Louvre Museum from the Cour Carree, this is positioned second from the right hand side.
