This first HD photo shows a marble statue called Campaspe, which is located in a niche on the Aile Nord of the former Palais du Louvre, and it sculpted to depict Campaspe, who was a mistress of Alexander the Great.
But according to some stories, after she was painted by the renowned painter of the time, Apelles, Alexander not only realised her beauty, but that Apelles had fallen in love with her, so he kept the portrait and presented Campaspe to the painter. And when you look at historical poems, the name Campaspe became a poetic synonym for a mans mistress, like a play from the 1500s.
Now this marble statue of Campaspe was produced by Auguste Ottin who was born in Paris in 1811 and studying under David d'angers at the Ecole des Beaux Arts he won the Prix de Rome in 1836, which meant he could further his studies at the Villa Medici French Academy in Rome.
Auguste Ottin received numerous different commissions and orders for statues to adorn tourist attractions including several for the Louvre Museum and many different churches, however, this French sculptor is most well recognised for his statue group on the Medici Fountain within the Jardin du Luxembourg, which is called Polyphemus surprising Acis and Galatea.
But getting back to this marble statue of Campaspe, in this photograph you can see that this is located on the first level of the Aile Nord facade within a niche, and when you are standing in courtyard of The Louvre called the Cour Carree, you will see that this is positioned third from the right hand side, or tenth from the left.
