This first HD photo showing a marble statue positioned within a niche on the Aile Nord wing of the former Palais du Louvre, which is called Nymphe des Fontaines, and in English this translates to Nymph of Fountains.
Now in Greek mythology a nymph was a female figure and spirit known as a Naiad, who presided over fresh water including fountains, streams and springs, and always depicted as a beautiful young woman, this particular statue was based upon this myth, which was also a popular subject throughout Europe and in Roman mythology as a female deity.
So this next photograph shows a close up of the Nymphe des Fontaines statue with features such as the water container, designed to represent the fountain aspect, which was sculpted by Augustin Courtet who was born in Lyon in 1821.
Augustin Courtet went to Paris and studied under famous French sculptors such as Jules Ramey and Auguste Dumont, and when he married he started calling himself Courtet of Arquinvilliers after his wife.
He produced many funerary monuments some of which are within the Pere Lachaise Cemetary, yet other statues and sculptures decorate the facades of buildings and tourist attractions, including the Nymph of Fountains on the Louvre Museum.
Yet this image shows the location of the Nymphe des Fontaines marble statue located within a niche on the first level of the Aile Nord, which is a wing of The Louvre facing into the Cour Carree. So when you are standing in this courtyard, you will see that this is positioned as the sixth statue from the left hand side of this southern facade.
