This first HD photo shows one of several bas reliefs for the new Palais de Chaillot, which was being constructed for the 1937 Universal exhibition in Paris, and several different younger artists were commissioned to produce different themes in a more modern style, like this one depicting architecture.
So when you are going round the sides of the Palais de Chaillot within the Jardins du Trocadero, it is on the facades of the two wings that you can come across these bas reliefs, and this particular one was produced by Joachim Costa.
Now Joachim Costa was born in 1888 and studied under Jean Antoine Injalbert at the Ecole des Beaux Arts to become a French sculptor, but his preferred style of work was through direct carving, feeling that architecture and sculpture should be interlinked, so it is fitting that this bas relief depicts architecture.
However, Joachim Costa produced many works in different materials such as bronze and ceramics, along with plaster models which can now be found in museums, but he also received commissions for war memorials, monuments and reliefs for different facades that can be found in various places throughout France.
