In this first HD photo you can see a lion statue in a laying position and as though it is looking down surveying the area, and made of stone, this was put in place on the wing of the former Palais du Louvre called the Guichets Lesdiguieres back in 1868.
This particular lion statue is one of a pair that were sculpted by Emmanuel Fremiet, and you will find that there are numerous lion statues in Paris as they were a popular subject back in the 1800s, and here you can see a close up photograph showing some of the realistic details that went into producing this.
So, providing a bit more information on this particular French sculptor, Emmanuel Fremiet, he became a well recognised animalier, which is basically a sculptor of animals, and he received numerous public commissions from Napoleon III, although many have not survived.
But some of his works can be found at tourist attractions in Paris such as an elephant at the Musee d'Orsay, a bear statue group at the Jardin des Plantes and the equestrian statue of Joan of Arc at the Place des Pyramides, not forgetting these lion statues at the Louvre Museum.
Yet in this image you can see the location of the lion statue, which is positioned above the arches on the third level balustrade by the roof line of the Guichet Lesdiguieres wing of The Louvre.
And this particular lion statue, positioned to the right hand side of the wing, can be seen from the courtyard called the Cour du Carrousel, which is as though you are facing towards the River Seine.
