This first HD photo shows a relief called Le Commerce, and this was sculpted onto what is known as a Fronton, or Pediment in English, which can be found on the Aile de Rohan of the former Palais du Louvre.
So here you can see a close up photograph showing more detail of the relief sculpture including the caduceus, which is a short staff entwined by two serpents, and in mythology this was a message from the gods to protect merchants, shepherds, etc and hence this relief is an allegory known as a symbol for Commerce.
Now this was sculpted by Combette, but unfortunately he is a very little known French sculptor, and the only information we have been able to find out about him, is the fact that he produced several reliefs for the Musee du Louvre and also for the Sevres Porcelain Manufactory.
But here you can see the entire top pediment on the Aile de Rohan, with the sculpture of Le Commerce by Combette, and as you are standing in the courtyard of The Louvre called the Cour du Carrousel, this is the first pediment on this wing.
