This first HD photo shows a top pediment on the Aile de Flore, which in French is known as a Fronton, and the sculpture within it is called Enlevement d'Europeon, which in English generally translates as the Rape of Europa or Abduction of Europa.
So, this close up photo shows the detail within the sculpture that shows a female figure and a bull, and in Greek mythology, Europa was the mother of King Minos of Crete, yet in a Cretan story she mounted a tame white bull, which was actually the God Zeus in disguise, who ended up abducting Europa to either seduce or ravish her.
Now this was sculpted by Camille Demesmay who was born in Besancon in 1815 and initially studied to gain a law degree in order to follow in his fathers footsteps, yet also studied art and sculpture, which is what he ended up pursuing as a career, rather than law.
Camille Demesnay was commissioned for different bas relief sculptures along with statues on the former Palais du Louvre during its renovation and Enlevement d'Europeon was one of these, plus he produced numerous busts and even became a professor of the School of Fine Arts in his home town, eventually also becoming a curator of the museum there.
Yet here you can see the entire pediment sculpture showing the Abduction of Europa above a window and by the roof line of the Aile de Flore, yet to be even more precise, if you are standing in the courtyard of the Louvre Museum called the Cour du Carrousel, this would be the third pediment from the left hand side on the facade of this long wing.
