Amazone is Amazon in English, and in Greek mythology, the Amazons were a race of warlike women who were daughters of Ares, the God of war and in this first HD photo you can see a female figure depicting one of the Amazon female warriors.
Now this shows a close up of the detailing that went into producing the Amazone statue with her helmet style head dress, which was produced by Jean Baptiste Klagmann who was born in 1810 and initially became an engraver before becoming a sculptor, having studied under Jules Ramey and Jean Jacques Feuchere.
During the reign of King Louis Philippe after executing an ornate water fountain, Jean Baptiste Klagmann received a commission for one of the Queens of France and Famous Women series in the Luxembourg Gardens and the Naiads on the Fontaine de Leda.
From there on he worked on other tourist attractions that were being renovated or constructed such as the Palais Royal and the Palais Garnier, plus this Amazon statue was a public commission for the former Palais du Louvre that Jean Baptiste Klagmann executed in 1866, just prior to passing away at the start of 1867.
So as you can tell, the statue of Amazone is located within a niche and this is on the second level of the Aile de Marsan and when you are looking at this facade of the Louvre Museum from the courtyards called the Cour du Carrousel, it is positioned as the 8th statue from the left hand side.
