A Sentinelle is a guard or person designated to keep watch, which is spelt Sentinel in English, and here you can see one of two sentinels that are located on the Pavillon de Flore.
This next HD photo shows a close up of the Sentinelle statue, which was produced by Pierre Jules Cavelier who was born in Paris in August 1814 and studying at the Ecole des Beaux Arts to become a French sculptor he went on to win the Prix de Rome, so furthered his studies at the Villa Medici before returning to Paris in 1847.
Pierre Jules Cavelier received numerous public commissions for statues and sculptures during his long and prolific career, still working as a sculptor while also becoming a professor at the Fine Arts School where he once studied.
Now his statues can be seen on famous buildings and tourist attractions including several churches, the Hotel de Ville, the Palais Garnier opera house and of course The Louvre with the Sentinelles statues plus one of the series of French men, etc.
So in this image, you can see the top part of the Pavillon de Flore, which is the western facade that faces onto the Cour du Carrousel looking towards the Jardin des Tuileries.
But to be even more precise the Sentinel statue we are talking about here is the one to the left hand side of the centre of this pavilion, and it is on the third level balustrade of the Louvre Museum, which was put in place in the 1870s.
