This first HD photo shows the bas relief sculpture located within a pediment on the Aile Est, or East Wing of the Cour Carree at the former Palais du Louvre, and called La Piete, this is well over 400 years old.
La Piete, which in English translates to Piety is an allegorical sculpture that was produced by Jean Goujon who was born in approximately 1510, although the exact year and even where he was born is unsure, but it is thought that he came from Normandy.
The first records for him were when he was working on a church in Rouen in 1540, then in 1544 he was again mentioned, but this time working as a sculptor on the Eglise Saint-Germain l'Auxerrois, which is the church opposite the former Palais du Louvre that was used by the royal family.
Jean Goujon was then mentioned as the sculptor for The Louvre each year between 1556 and 1562, but for religious reasons he left France and the last records for him were in Bologna, Italy in 1563 and at the start of 1564.
So, with these dates in mind, The Piety sculpture was produced sometime between 1556 and 1562, although the exact year is unclear, but as you can see from this photo, it is located in the entrance passage to the Cour Carree in the Passage du Pavillon Saint Germain l'Auxerrois, named after the church opposite that we mentioned above.
