So in this first HD photo you can see the top pediment of the Pavillon Richelieu wing of the former Palais du Louvre, and this sculpture by Francisque Duret is called France Protegeant la Science et l'Art, which in English translates to France Protecting the Science and Art.
Now France Protegeant la Science et l'Art is an allegorical sculpture that was executed by Francisque Duret, who was the son of French sculptor Francois-Joseph Duret born in 1804, and initially was going to become involved in theatre before following in his fathers footsteps.
Having entered the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, he won the Prix de Rome, so spent time at the Villa Medicis furthering his studies, which then led to many different public commissions including this one for The Louvre, yet probably his most recognised work is that of the statue group depicting Saint Michael slaying the Demon on the Fontaine Saint Michel.
However, here you can see a close up photo we took showing the central allegorical statue that was designed to represent France Protecting Since and Arts, and although hard to see clearly from the courtyard, this helps show the immense details that went into the pediment sculpture.
But this provides a perspective looking up at the ornate facade of the Pavillon Richelieu from the Cour Napoleon of The Louvre Museum, and this is the central pavilion wing facing south into the courtyard, with the additional embellishments having been put in place during the restoration of the palace, between the years 1852 and 1857.
