La Force is an allegorical statue that is one of two sculpted by the same artist, which are located on the Pavillon Denon wing of the former Palais du Louvre, and when you are within the Cour Napoleon courtyard looking at the facade, this statue is positioned above the pillars on the second level to the left hand side below the caryatids.
Now the Force, also known as Strength, was produced by Antoine Louis Barye who was born in 1795 and initially became a goldsmith before starting to produce medallions and small bronzes, then he started to execute larger statues such as this one for The Louvre.
However, he is most well known for producing animal sculptures and he is classed as one of the greatest French animaliers, with even a square in Paris being dedicated to him, plus works of his can be found within tourist attractions in Paris such as the Tuileries Gardens.
But he also received many commissions from the French State and the City of Paris for monumental statues and sculptures including some of the masks or mascarons on the Pont Neuf, and the eagles on the Pont d'Iena, and received numerous different awards and medals for his works that can now be found all over the world.
