A pediment is the top part of a building on the facade that is normally above columns and often decorated, and in this first HD photo you can see the ornate pediment, known as a Fronton in French, which is located on the Daru Pavilion of the former Palais du Louvre.
Now this was sculpted by Jean Louis Brian and is called La Sculpture et la Peinture, which in English translates to Sculpture and Painting and in this close up photo you can see two winged allegorical figures, with the left one depicting a sculpture holding a hammer and chisel, whereas the one on the right is holding a paint brush and an artists pallet to depict painting.
Yet this last image shows the entire top part of the Pavillon Daru facade, which can be seen from the Cour Napoleon courtyard of the Musee du Louvre, and you will find that this French sculptor, Jean Louis Brian, also produced the Caryatids you can see on either side of the dormer window just below the pediment.
