There are actually four lion statues in total that were produced for the Pont Alexandre III and two of these were sculpted by Jules Dalou, yet the other two were by a different French sculptor, as there were numerous different artists commissioned to execute the embellishments for the famous bridge over the River Seine.
Now this particular statue was made of stone and called Lion Conduit Par un Enfant, which in English translates to Lion Led By a Child, this was started in 1897 and was inaugurated when the bridge was officially opened for the 1900 Universal Exposition in Paris, and can be found on the left bank of the River Seine in the 7th Arrondissement of Paris.
So as we mentioned earlier, the Lion Led By a Child statue was produced by Jules Dalou who was born in Paris in 1838 and studied to become a French sculptor initially under Jean Baptiste Carpeaux and then under Francois Joseph Duret at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, first exhibiting at the 1861 Paris Salon for French artists.
And although the Lion Conduit Par un Enfant is exquisite in itself, the most elaborate monument that Jules Dalou is recognised for is The Triumph of the Republic statue group at the Place de la Nation, yet others such as the Monument to Delacroix and The Triumph of Silenus are other popular tourist attractions from this sculptor who was awarded the Legion of Honour.
