We were on the right bank of the River Seine in the 8th Arrondissement of Paris, when we took these high definition photos showing the statue called La France Contemporaine, which was sculpted by Gustave Michel and is located on the Pont Alexandre III.

This first image shows the whole allegorical statue called La France Contemporaine, and when you translate this into English it means Contemporary France, and this is one of the numerous different statues produced for the Pont Alexandre III.

The Pont Alexandre III is classed as an historical monument and the most ornate bridge in Paris, and in this HD photo you can see one of the four columns with the statue of France Contemporaine and the gilded statue of Renommee des Sciences on the top, but you can also see the famous tourist attraction of the Eiffel Tower in the background.

You will find that numerous different artists worked on the embellishments for this bridge over the River Seine, which was constructed for the 1900 World Fair in Paris, and The Contemporary France statue was sculpted by Gustave Michel.

Now La France Contemporaine is located on the right bank of the River Seine in the 8th Arrondissement and as you are looking at the bridge from the river bank, this is located on the downstream side, which means it is the right hand 17 metre high column.

So this next high definition photo shows a close up of a tablet on the statue and inscribed on it are the names of famous artists such as Francois Rude, Eugene Delacroix and Victor Hugo, which is one of the allegory features depicting Contemporary France.

And as we mentioned earlier, La France Contemoraine was produced by Gustave Michel who was born in Paris in the September of 1851, and entering the studio of Francois Jouffroy he became a French sculptor, with his first exhibit at the 1875 Paris Salon where he got recognised and started to receive public commissions.

In fact, Gustave Michel was commissioned for the allegorical sculpture groups on the Bir-Hakeim bridge as well as this one of Contemporary France for the Pont Alexandre III, yet his most famous work is probably the monument to Jules Ferry, which is located at another popular tourist attraction in Paris, called the Tuileries Gardens.

Yet this last photograph provides a bit more of a perspective as to not only how tall the column really is, but also the sheer size of the allegorical statue of La France Contemporaine, which was inaugurated in the April of 1900 when the Pont Alexandre III was opened for the Universal Exposition.
