This first HD photo shows a close up of the garlands of sea shells and aquatic plants that adorn the base of the pedestal, which is located within the centre of the monumental fountain, situated within the Jardin des Grands Explorateurs.
Now this monumental water fountain is known by different names including the Fontaine de l'Observatoire and also the Carpeaux Fountain, after one of the artists who worked on this, but there were several different artists that sculpted the different elements, which were cast in bronze and put in place between 1872 and 1875.
So the garlands of sea shells and aquatic plants were produced by Louis Villeminot, who was born in 1826 and became a draftsman as well as sculptor, working for Viollet le Duc, who is most famous for the restoration of the Notre dame Cathedral in Paris.
Yet becoming friends with people such as Gabriel Davioud and Charles Garnier, Louis Villeminot received several commissions for works relating to the restructuring of Paris and the ornamental works which were being added to this city, including of course, the bronze garlands for this monumental and ornamental water fountain that you can see in this photo, located on the pedestal behind the horses.
