This first HD photo shows a close up of the celestial globe which has a band around it with the signs of the zodiac, and this was sculpted by Eugene Legrain, and is positioned at the top of the monumental fountain that has an official name of Fontaine des Quatre Parties du Monde, although it is sometimes referred to as the Carpeaux Fountain or the Fontaine de l'Observatoire.
Here you can see the celestial globe, which is cast in bronze and is being supported by four allegorical female figures that represent four parts of the world, which were sculpted by Jean Baptiste Carpeaux, yet the globe was sculpted by one of his pupils Eugene Legrain.
Now Eugene Legrain was born in 1837, and studied to become a French sculptor, yet he is very little known compared to many others that were working on public monuments in Paris during the same period of time, but you can see in this image the detailing that went into the top piece of this monumental fountain.
So, this photograph again shows the outer sphere and ring with the signs of the zodiac along with the inner globe of the world hanging within. And according to some sources, the reason this was sculpted by Eugene Legrain, was due to the ill health of Jean Baptiste Carpeaux, who passed away shortly after the monumental fountain was completed, as it took longer than first expected, due to work being halted during the Franco-Prussian war and the Paris Commune.
And in this last high definition photo you can see the Fontaine des Quatre Parties du Monde in all its glory with the central sculpture of the celestial globe being held up by the four allegorical female statues, which is located at the southern end of the Jardin Marco Polo within the Jardin des Grands Explorateurs in between the Paris Observatory and the Luxembourg Gardens.
