This first HD photo shows the Goddess of Love statue, which in French is called Venus au Dauphin, and made of marble it stands at a height of 1.95 metres, not including the base, or tall pedestal and is part of the collection known as the d'Apres l'Antique.
Now this next image shows a closer view and here you can see the dolphin more clearly, although personally to us, it looks far more like a vicious sea creature than how a dolphin is often portrayed and normally depicted.
Yet this photo shows the opposite side of the marble statue where you can see the full female figure, which was sculpted to represent Venus, the Goddess of Love and Beauty in Roman mythology, but in Greek mythology, it was Aphrodite who was her counterpart.
Unfortunately, there are no records as to who sculpted this statue of Venus with Dolphin, not what year it was produced, however, it was located within the paterres of the Jardin du Luxembourg during the First Empire, and has remained within the gardens ever since, and is classed as one of the antique statues.
But getting back to the Goddess of Love, in Roman mythology Venus was born of sea foam, which is why she is often depicted with a clam or other sea life around her. However, Venus is also referred to as the Goddess of beauty, sex, victory and fertility, having had many lovers and bore many children, with her two main divine lovers being her husband Vulcan and her lover Mars.
And in this last image showing the statue of Venus au Dauphin, you can see that it is below the terrace, and it looks towards the Grand Basin where you can often find children sailing model boats, which would actually be behind us, and this particular sculpture is located on the western side of this part of the Luxembourg Gardens.
