This first HD photo shows the bronze statue of Flore, which translates in English to Flora, and this sculpture was based upon the Goddess of Spring and Flowers in Roman mythology, who was also sometimes referred to as the Goddess of Youth.
Now this statue was made of bronze and different copies were cast in 1910 and if you look very carefully at the base of the statue by the left foot, you will see that this has been signed with the monogram Aristide Maillol often used on his works.
Aristide Maillol created numerous statues and sculptures based upon the female form, which were to be sensual and appealing, yet this is a more unusual statue, due to the fact that the woman's hair is down, whereas numerous compositions were designed with the hair tied back in a bun.
And it was actually one of a series of sculptures that were commissioned to the French sculptor and artist Aristide Maillol by a Russian collector to represent the seasons, and hence why it is based on the ancient Roman Goddess of Spring and Flowers, designed with a long figure hugging dress and stately style stance.
So as you can see in this high definition photo, the bronze statue of Flore is located in between boxwood hedges in the Jardin du Carrousel, and being a part of the Tuileries Gardens and the Musee du Louvre, which is the building of the former royal palace that you can see in the background, the area was re-laid out in the 1990s to accommodate several different sculptures by Maillol.
Now according to some sources, the face of the woman Aristide Maillol used for the bronze statue you can see in this close up image, was from a young woman whom he saw walking down the street in Banyuls, initially sculpting this in clay to get the features, and this town was where the artist had a home and where he also died in 1944.
It was actually down to Dina Vierny who was the model and muse of the artist for the last ten years of his life, that we can now admire the sculptures, and as well as setting up the Musee Maillol in Paris in his former home and studio, she also donated a whole series of statues to the City of Paris for everyone to enjoy for free including this one of Flore.
So this last HD photo shows another angle of the bronze statue depicting Flore, or Flora, the Goddess of Spring and Flowers and it was the French Minister of Culture, Andre Malraux, who chose the location in the Jardin du Carrousel within the Jardin des Tuileries, which was first put in place in 1964 along with the other statues.
