As you can see from this first HD photo, the stone statue of Naiade is positioned in a niche, and this is located on the Aile de Flore wing of the former royal palace of The Louvre, and can be seen from the Carrousel courtyard on the second level, the sixth statue from the left hand side.
And this was designed as an allegory statue to represent a Naiad, which is a type of water nymph in Greek mythology who would watch over fountains, wells, springs, streams and other forms of fresh water.
So, this next image shows a close view of the Naiad statue holding a water vessel, and this was sculpted by Jean Jules Bernard Salmson, who was born in Paris on 18th July 1823, and the son of an engraver, he entered the Ecole des Beaux Arts, becoming a French sculptor.
And from this, after exhibiting at Paris Salons, he received several orders for different statues and sculptures to adorn some famous tourist attractions in Paris including The Louvre, the Musee d'Orsay and the Palais Garnier Opera, receiving the Legion of Honour in 1867, a year after this particular water nymph statue was put in place.
