Now as you are looking at the Aile Daru wing of the Louvre, you will find that the stone statue of l'Hopital is positioned on the first level balustrade of the facade, and it is also the first statue in this set of famous people in French history, which was a public commission given to the French sculptor Jean-Baptiste Claude Eugene Guillaume, and put in place in 1857.
This next HD photo shows the workmanship that went into the sculpture by Eugene Guillaume, as he was referred to, and born in 1822, he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, which is where he gained the Prix de Rome in 1845, and upon his return from Rome, he became director of the fine arts school in 1864.
Yet he was also a writer, specifically relating to sculpture and architecture of the Classical period and the Italian Renaissance, and was elected a member of the Academie Francaise in 1898, and in 1891 he went to Rome to be the director of the Academie de France there, and held the position until 1904 before he passed away.
Now this last image shows a close up of the plaque located at the base of the statue, which is dedicated to Michel de l'Hopital, although his name is sometimes spelt l'Hospital, and born in 1507, he initially studied law, yet became a counsellor to the Paris parliament, then he became president of the treasury and then Chancellor of France at the request of Catherine de Medici in 1560, eventually going into retirement in seclusion due to the religious wars, then passing away in 1573.
