You will find that there are a set of statues located within the Jardin du Luxembourg, which relate to queens and famous women, or as they are known in French, Reines de France et Femmes Illustres, and this HD photo shows the statue of Louise de Savoie, which in English is spelt Louise of Savoy.
This close up photograph shows how the artist, Jean-Baptiste Auguste Clesinger, depicted Louise of Savoy, who was born in September 1476 and became a Regent of France for her son King Francois I, firstly in 1515, then on two other occasions when the King went to war, and when he was imprisoned in Spain.
Now this statue was one of the Reigns de France et Femmes Illustre that King Louis Philippe I chose to have displayed around the grand basin of the Luxembourg Gardens, and this was commissioned by a ministerial order dated 14th July 1846.
And standing at a height of 2.35 metres, this statue was commissioned to Jean-Baptiste Auguste Clesinger for 12,000 French francs, and sculpted in marble, it was not actually completed until 30th June 1851, but then put in position on the right hand side of the garden on the balustrade terrace, which is to the south east of the grand basin.
So talking about the artist, Jean-Baptiste Auguste Clesinger was born in Besancon in 1814 and normally just known as Auguste Clesinger, he became a French sculptor and painter, and is probably most well known for his death mask of Frederic Chopin and the cast of his hands, although, as you have read earlier, he produced this marble statue of Louise de Savoie along with many others.
But this last image shows a close up of the plaque, which is located on the stone base of the statue dedicated to this Regent of France, and although it has faded over time, it shows the year of her birth and also the year of her death, which was actually 22nd September 1531.
