In this first HD photo you can see the top part of the monument with a bust of Theodore de Banville who was an 1800s French poet and writer, and this was sculpted by Jules Roulleau who was renowned for his statuary of famous men.
Here you can see the whole monument, which was designed by the architect Octave Courtois Suffit, who received the Grand Prix de Rome for architecture in 1881, and measuring a total of 2.4 metres in height, with the bust section being 0.8 metres, this was constructed with marble and bronze.
So this close up photograph shows the bronze sculpture section of the monument to Theodore de Banville, who wrote several comedies in verse that were performed at numerous theatres, along with many other poems, literary tales, reviews, etc, and was made a Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur in 1858 and promoted to Officier in 1886.
Now as we mentioned earlier, this monumental statue was designed by Octave Courtois Suffit, yet it was realised by the French sculptor Jules Roulleau, who was born in 1855, yet died at a very young age in 1891, but even in this short time frame, he became well known for his sculptures and statues of famous men, which is why he was awarded the Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1890.
As you can tell from this image, this statue is located close to railings, which is on the north east edge of the Luxembourg Gardens close to the Palais du Luxembourg, and the monument dedicated to the memory of the poet and writer, was inaugurated on 28th November 1892, and has remained in the same place ever since.
Yet in this image you can see a close up showing the marble plaque with the name of this poet and writer, Theodore de Banville, who devoted himself to letters straight after leaving school in Paris and was praised by other chief men of letters in his time such as Victor Hugo.
And in this last HD photo you can see two dates, which are engraved onto the bust section of the monumental statue, and these represent the year of 1823 when Theodore de Banville was born in Moulins in the Auvergne region, and the year of 1891 when he passed away, having spent most of his life in Paris, and he was buried in the Montparnasse cemetery.
