In this first image you can see the front view of the bronze statue called La Nuit, which translates to The Night in English, and this was realised by the French sculptor Aristide Maillol back in 1902 with different casts produced up to around 1908, although there are also many replicas that have been produced since.
And this particular bronze statue of the lady sitting with her head hidden resting on her arms can be found within the Jardin des Tuileries in an area dedicated to works by Maillol, which is located in between the Place de la Concorde and the Louvre Museum in the 1st Arrondissement of Paris.
Aristide Joseph Bonaventure Maillol was born in the December of 1861 in southern France and initially studied painting, then he took up tapestry design, yet later went into carving and then in his more mature career he started producing monumental sculptures, with this statue being one of his first major pieces of art in this form.
You will find that the majority of the sculptures and statues that Maillol produced later in his life all concentrated on the female form in a classical style with an emphasis on a stable form, just like you can see in this HD photo of La Nuit that depicts a lady sitting on the ground with knees bent, almost as though she is resting.
Yet this photograph shows the opposite side of the bronze statue called The Night positioned on a stone base, which is situated in an area surrounded by trees and bushes, with another section of the Tuileries Garden stretching out far behind.
The figurative style that Aristide Maillol succeeded in capturing within his sculptures has been an influence to numerous artists, like you can see in this image showing the back view of La Nuit, but unfortunately his career came to an unforeseen end when he died in a car accident in 1944.
And in this last image you can see a carved mark that has been etched into the bronze statue, which is located on the base next to the left leg of the sculpture, and as you can tell, this is a monogram that is a shortened version of Aristide Maillol, with both his initials intertwining into one.
