In these HD photos you will see a statue of Bon-Adrien Jeannot de Moncey, which is located in a niche of the Aile de Rohan-Rivoli, on the ground floor level facing towards the Rue de Rivoli, which is on the opposite side of the wing to the Cour du Carrousel of the Louvre Museum and the Carrousel Gardens.
Bon-Adrien Jeannot de Moncey was born in 1754 and embarking on a military career he became a prominent soldier in the French Revolutionary Wars and Napoleonic Wars, receiving many recognitions including a rare hereditary honour of the Duke of Conegliano, a title of Baron of Conegliano and Peer of France.
Napoleon Bonaparte also made him a Marshal of France plus he was awarded the Grand Cordon of the Legion of Honour and even after the fall of the Empire and King Louis XVIII was reigning, Bon-Adrien Jeannot de Moncey was dedicated to his country, even fighting on Montmartre at Clichy when Paris was invaded and is one of the people named on the Arc de Triomphe.
Originally it was decided back at the start of the 1900s that statues depicting generals, Marshals of France and military commanders would be depicted on this wing of the Louvre, however, World War I interrupted this, and they were only added after the Great War had finished, having been sculpted to numerous different sculptors.
Now this particular statue of Bon-Adrien Jeannot de Moncey was produced by Felix Alexandre Desruelles, who was born in Valenciennes in 1865 and studying to become a French sculptor he was awarded a second prize in the Prix de Rome in 1891.
And when you are looking at the close up of the above image, you can see that Desruelles has inscribed his name along with the date of 1918 on the left hand side just behind the feet of the statue above the pedestal, which is when the Moncey statues was sculpted.
Winning a gold medal at the 1900 World Fair in Paris, Felix Alexandre Desruelles became a well renowned sculptor being commissioned for many commemorative sculptures and large monuments, especially War Memorials from World War I like one in Lille.
Yet probably one of his most well known statues in Paris, is that of The Fruits, which is one of the eight golden statues located at the Palais de Chaillot that was sculpted in bronze and gilded, although he also produced a fountain that is located within a square called the Square Felix Desruelles.
