This first HD photo shows a statue group above a sculpture, just known as Groupe d'animaux, which translates to Group of animals in English, and there are actually four different versions that adorn the facades of the Aile de Marsan and the Aile de Flore produced by different artists and replicated several times.
It was Auguste Nicolas Cain, the renowned animalier, who produced this particular statue group for The Louvre, and born in 1821, he initially studied under Francois Rude to become a French sculptor, starting to exhibit at the Paris Salons, focusing mainly on domestic and wild animals within his works.
And there are numerous monumental statues of his found at tourist attractions around Paris including within the Jardin des Tuileries, Jardin du Luxembourg, Chateau de Chantilly, etc, yet Auguste Cain is known throughout the world with casts of his statues in places such as America.
Now this particular Group of animals is located on the Aile de Marsan, and when you are looking at the former Palais du Louvre from the courtyard called the Cour du Carrousel, you will see that this is the first sculpture group underneath the pediment above the sculpture, which was put in place in the 1860s.
